Questions and Answers
I just want to know your opinions because my friend is really ignorant on this subject and thinks that the only good voice is a "choral sounding" voice, versus your throat voice, chest voice, or any other kind. Sure, a choral voice is good for chorus, but is it good for all kinds of singing?
Well, it's always good to sing from your stomach, not your throat, if that helps… It all depends on the style, really. The only universal "good" way is to sing on pitch with the right notes. When it relates to the style, like you say, choral-sounding is good for chorus, but for let's say country, it will not be as rehearsed and formal, y'know? Listen to songs from the style and you can try to master it.
…Does that help any?
… Without having to actually take a class or join a choir or something? I kind of want to sing in the talent show, and I really like to, but I'm not sure if I'm good enough. I heard my friend and she's really REALLY good…
I don't mean like rock or songs like that, just… Songs. Like Phantom of the Opera (but without too much soprano) or songs that don't require much using voices specially like in modern music.
Please, please please!!! And thank you very much!
Do what those others said, and also sing in the shower. It's a way to practice without people hearing you. Practicing in front of your family and/or friends is a good idea, too, because if you make it into the show, you'll be singing in front of a whole bunch of people. Before you start practicing a song, do some warm-ups. Do a few scales to see how high and how low you can go. You may surprise yourself. If you hear yourself hitting a really high or really low note that you can't believe you hit, do it again; don't be afraid to stretch your range. The only way to expand your range is to practice.
I was an alto/soprano (in between) a few years ago, and I was kinda afraid to go any higher or lower. My choir teacher told me that the only way to be able to sing those other notes is to practice, and I really wanted to be able to sing more, so I did what he said: I practiced (though it was scary at first), and now, I can sing into the high soprano range and can also sing tenor. 🙂
DON'T BE AFRAID TO TRY THINGS!
I love to sing but I want to keep my voice from getting damaged. I can't sing in high pitches but I would love to learn how to. What are some good ways to broaden my range.
Before and after you are actually singing, take care of your voice and warm up and warm down. This can be done by singing scales with a piano, or if you dont have one and are not that sure about the technicalities, just sing the doe, ray, me, fa, so, la, te, does, up and down and keep going! It's boring, but it will maintain your voice well and produce awesome sounds from your voice when your actually singing. Usually 15 minutes of solid scales before and after would be a good start. Don't ignore it, just do it!
Doing the scales will help you get the higher end notes too, because they efficiently excersise your voice and get it ready to attack all the notes in your range, and comfortably too, because your all warmed up!
If you don't do these excercises, you'll be damaging your throat and voice chords and it may affect you in the future. Ask any professional singer and he/she will tell you. Scales and more scales are the key to an increase in range and effectively get you ready to sing the songs you love!
Take care of that voice now!
