Are Her Majesty's youngest subjects taught to properly honour their sovereign? Are Her Majesty's portraits hung in schools to engender reverence?
When I went to school can't remember singing God Save The Queen but we did recite 'I am an Australian, I love my country, I salute The British Empire' not sure of the rest of it.
God Save The Queen was played at all Picture Theatres, major sporting events etc. Until Advance Australia Fair was voted on in a referendum.
Can't remember a portrait of the Queen hanging in school, but some Shire Councils still have her portrait hanging in the board room, pride of place above the Shire President's chair.
I plan on teaching a unit in which my sophomore English students (high school) explore questions they have about other cultures around the world. The plan is to have them research the answers and turn that research into children's books. I would like to have some models, real picture books that give insight into other cultures around the world.
If nothing else, can you help me find a good place to start?
The Singing Man by: Angela Medearis is based on a folktale from Nigeria. It is a 4th-5th grade picture book. Also, try the public library. They will have a cultural section in the children's section. If not, the librarian can help you. I often have to get books from the public library for my 5th grade class.
